“Dod pieci!” (High Five!) charity marathon
The “Dod pieci!” charity marathon is part of an international project called “Serious Request”, in which radio DJs in different European countries broadcast for a week from a special glass studio, putting the focus on a specific group or socially relevant topic chosen by the charity marathon. Everyone is invited to donate in exchange for hearing their favourite song on the radio.
The Cause of This Year’s Donations
This year, the public media charity marathon “Dod pieci!” will focus on the healthcare gaps in Latvia, highlighting the financial dead-end faced by people with critical and acute health problems who need immediate help but the treatment costs of which are not covered by the state. These are cases where a certain amount of money is preventing people from getting on with life.
Charity Marathon Venue and Time
This year, “Dod pieci!” will take place from 13 December until 19 December. The glass Studio of Latvian Radio 5 will be located in Riga, Dome Square.
Project Promoters
“Dod pieci!” charity marathon is organised by Latvian Radio together with Latvian Television and news portal LSM.lv, which provides technical and informational support for the implementation of the project.
Project Cause
Each year, the charity marathon highlights a topic of importance to society and supports communities in great need. The marathon’s main goal is a more humane environment – every “Dod pieci!” story is about how we still need to work on ourselves as a society.
Where the Donations Will Go
The funds donated during “Dod pieci!” will be passed on to the charity organisation Ziedot.lv, which will help with the purchase of medicines, necessary examinations and diagnostics, as well as cover other types of assistance in cases where treatment needs to be started immediately but the individual donation project has not yet collected the funds.

The project partner Ziedot.lv provides the infrastructure and administration of the donation collection in line with the project’s cause.
Sickness destroys, hope heals
Every year, more than 300 people with critical and acute health problems turn to Ziedot.lv, asking for immediate help to purchase medicines, undergo examinations and diagnosis, receive assistance in the treatment of rare and severe diagnoses, and for surgeries and procedures both in Latvia and abroad.

Why are we helping children and young people at risk this year?
For example, the State Audit Office’s 2023 audit report “Oncology – a priority without results” concludes that the measures implemented by the Ministry of Health do not ensure the early detection of oncological diseases, effective functioning of the “Green Corridor” or reimbursement of medicines needed by patients, which have a significant impact on Latvia’s public health indicators. The report assesses the reimbursement of oncology medicines as hopeless, unequal and humiliating. In addition, other patients with life-threatening diseases face similar problems and require large sums of money for treatment, examinations and surgery.
Ziedot.lv points out that the number of cases and the total amount of help needed is significant and unpredictable. It is, therefore, essential that emergency funds are available at critical times and that people can receive help, even partial help, immediately, while individual donations are being raised for long-term support or in chronic cases.
It is the responsibility of all of us to stand together and offer assistance. We cannot allow seriously ill people to go without help because sudden health problems can hit any of us – illness is not planned, it does not care, and it does not spare.
